Walks Grading

Following members' feedback on the major revision of the walks grading system in Aug 2006, the walks grades were revised and simplified, and minor refinements have been made since then.  The walks grading system has offered four standard grades, called simply A to D, and a hybrid grade C/D.  A, B, C and D walks are normally provided every Wednesday and, and A, B and C/D walks every Sunday.  In addition, there is a less frequent - approximately fortnightly - E walk.

The revised structure has eliminated the height and pace descriptors of the Aug 06 system, which were found to be somewhat confusing and superfluous.  The new structure is outlined below and is applied consistently across Wednesday and Sunday walks:

Grade

Distance

A

12 miles plus

B

10 – 12 miles

C

7 - 9 miles

C/D

5 - 9 miles

D

5 - 7 miles

E

3 - 4 miles

Any Walk Leader may submit a walk (including a pub lunch if desired) for any of the above grades for any normal walking day.

Meeting Points

All walks have the same meeting point in Park Road, Harrogate o/s SE 302545 (Behind Trinity Church, running parallel to the main Otley Road)

Note that we don't run all grades of walks each time - for details, see the walks programme.

Cars leave promptly from the above meeting places at the times stated in walks programme (car drivers are requested to go to the meeting points in Harrogate whenever possible, as not all members have transport, and to minimise the number of cars parked at the start of walks)

It is important that you inform the Leader if you are going directly to the start as:

(a) there may be restricted parking

(b) the start point may have changed

(c) the Leader is at liberty to cancel the walk if there is no-one at the Harrogate meeting point and no-one has phoned.

Meet Leader at...

Walk Leaders specify in the Programme whether they are going to Park Road first or straight to the start of the walk. If they specify Park Road but no one else arrives, they are entitled to cancel the walk. So, if the Programme states ‘Meet Leader at Park Road’ but you decide to go straight to the start, it is in your interest to let the Leader know beforehand—otherwise the walk might have been cancelled or the starting point changed without your knowing it.

Conversely, if the Programme states ‘Meet Leader at start’ but you decide to go to Park Road first, it also makes sense for you to let the Leader know this, so that he or she knows that you will be coming (and therefore waits for you!).

Cars

Try to Share:  Please try to take your car initially to Park Road to ensure everyone has a lift.  Finding spare seats is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly for C walks.  Also, more cars left in Harrogate means fewer parked in our beautiful countryside and villages.

Mileage Charges:  Although it is not a club rule, it is normal to offer the driver help towards the expense. The suggested rate is 30p per mile for the return journey (ie to walk start and back), shared equally between everybody in the car including the driver.  Note - members accepting lifts do so at their own risk.  Also, be aware that the driver's car insurance does not cover passengers’ property.

Guidelines for Pub Stops/Lunches

The leader will be at liberty to continue the walk after 20 minutes when "Pub stop" is detailed in the programme.  "Pub lunches" take longer and the walk will continue when everyone is ready or at the leader’s discretion.

Dogs

Dogs are not allowed on club walks.

Accident Reporting

Should you be so unfortunate as to be involved in an accident whilst you are on Club outing, please report it to the General Secretary, using the form available either from her or downloadable directly from here.  Instructions for completing the form are on the document itself, but please note that it is essential that you complete all sections, including the age and occupation of the injured person.  You will need the Adobe Reader program to open the downloaded documents - in the unlikely event that you don't already have a copy on your computer, a free copy is available here:

Note, though, that the Reader program is a very large download; if you only have a dial-up connection to the Internet, it would probably be better to get a hard copy of the form directly from the Secretary.

However you obtain the form, once it is completed it should be returned to the General Secretary.

Footpath Obstructions

If you encounter an obstructed footpath in North Yorkshire, please report to NYCC by e-mail to paths@northyorks.gov.uk.  Further information is available from the NYCC website here (opens in a new window), where a online form is eventually due to be available.

Walking Etiquette

We hope every Member will enjoy all aspects of Club life. However, we hope also that each Member will do his or her utmost to:

(a) Help other Members to enjoy themselves

(b) Support the Rules, purpose and spirit of the Club

(c) Support Leaders & Organisers when attending walks and events

(d) Show consideration to Club car drivers when accepting lifts

(e) Park and act with consideration for local residents, churchgoers etc

and

(f) Follow the Countryside Code.

Mobile Phones

Whilst this is of course entirely voluntary, the Committee would be very grateful if Walks Leaders (where applicable)  would bring their mobiles with them, switching on when leaving home and keeping on until at least the beginning of their walk. This will allow people joining the walk to contact the leader with any last-minute problems, queries, etc.

Personal Accident Insurance

Only paid-up and temporary members are covered by the Club's third party insurance.  However, participation in all Club activities is at your own risk, with no liability attaching to the Club, its Officers or its Leaders.

In particular, please note that the Club does not provide personal accident cover for its members, who should therefore make their own arrangements taking account of their approach to insurance and their personal circumstances.  Several companies offer policies for approximately £5 per month for reasonably comprehensive cover.

Club Subscriptions

Details of the Club subscriptions are given here.  Any membership not renewed by 31st January each year will lapse automatically, and the £3 joining fee will be applied to any members wishing to rejoin after allowing their membership to lapse.

Walk Leaders

The programme depends on voluntary leaders.  If you have not led a walk before, ask an experienced leader to help you plan a walk.  After selecting a date with the relevant walks collector you will be given a form on which to record walk details.
